It's incredible that the bathrooms at El Monte Station are a pool of urine and garbage.
In addition, there are only two for the number of people who use bus transportation. It is a real shame and lack of respect for users, zero maintenance of health services. They don't care about people's health.

My first few visits were baffling. But once I figured out where my particular bus would be found, I was set. Toilet facilities are downstairs, hi tech, clean, and often well-attended, so don't count on a quick in and out. Tap card kiosks and arrival-departure information screens are located on the top floor. No smoking anywhere, supposedly, and there are transit cops around, but I have seen bus drivers lighting up, and I have successfully sneaked a smoke or two without incident.

TLDR: Okay for a bus station but the way it's set up is a bit dangerous.

Things I liked:
1. Bathroom access(when they are not out of service).
2. Least one lift is always working.
3. Place is pretty clean and genersally safe.
4.Staff is friendly.

Things that could improve:

1. Clear *legal* directions to exit:
I find it to be a bit dangerous there is no clear legal exit path to street level. Emergency kinda? Anyother time than that security will be summoned.
For anyone new to the palce like I was, it was trial and error figuring out you can not legally go on foot from the surface level bus stops out to the street.

You have to go down any lower level access methods to a particualr set of stairs/lift to access it (the last set to the east of lower level to be exact). The wrong ones makes a loop.
In a panic the clearest open and unobstructed path out of the busway that is not heavily gated/resricted. Leads to both the street and freeway.

2.A posted map of where each buses boards and lets off:
They can be the same spot or opposite side of the station.

3. More staff:
Even before covid there was not much staff to ask for assistance from. Just security on golf carts parked far into no walk zones and drivers heading for a much needed break.

I am not counting staff in the street level offices considering one needs to figure out how exit the termal entrirely to get to that location. As well as limited hours.
Not helpful if you are trying to catch a contection quickly.

I’ve gone to LA via Silver from here. First time in public transit as well. Buses were well maintained, Tao Card machines are easy to use, multiple languages as well. Postmodern architecture is beautiful and a nice touch to “Modernizing” El Monte. No seriously, it’s beautiful, especially with the ongoing Vineyard Project, it’ll make this place even nicer.

Good parking and access to local bus transit lines. Bring some patience because of the wait and fellow passangers. Always wear a mask.
